From Lumber Town to Lake Town
Spray Foam Insulation in Douglas often means older houses that have been updated, plus new homes built on lakeshore lots. Douglas started in 1851 as a lumber mill town called Dudleyville and was renamed in 1861. It became a village in 1870, and residents voted in December 2004 to make it a city. Its population grew 11.9% between 2010 and 2020, to 1,378.
Lumber that rebuilt Chicago
Sawmills in the area supplied much of the lumber used to rebuild Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Once the forests were cut, the cleared land turned to fruit, especially peaches, and later to resorts and tourism. That history shows up in the housing: old frame homes, converted farmhouses and summer cottages, with newer houses filling in.
Lake exposure
The city has more than 1.5 miles of Lake Michigan coastline and over two miles of frontage on the Kalamazoo River and Lake Kalamazoo Harbor. Houses near the shore get hard wind in winter and humid air in summer. Air sealing, rim joist foam and dry crawl spaces are the main concerns.
Second homes
The 2010 census counted 1,075 housing units but only 645 households, so many homes in Douglas are seasonal or second homes. Those need a shell that can handle being lightly heated for months. We schedule work for when the owners are away and the house can air out after foam.
Newer builds on old lots
New homes in Douglas are usually built with modern insulation, but owners still call about cold rooms over garages, drafty walkouts and attic hatches that were never sealed. Those are quick fixes with foam and weatherstripping, and they are worth doing early in a new house before finishes make access harder.

Douglas Questions
What should I insulate first in an older Douglas home?
Usually the attic floor (sealed, then blown in to depth) and the rim joist. Walls come next if they are empty.
Do lakeshore homes need closed-cell foam?
In crawl spaces, on rim joists and on any roof deck without an attic, closed-cell is the usual choice because it handles damp air well.
Can you insulate while we are away?
Yes. Many second-home owners prefer that, and it gives foam time to cure and air out.
What does insulation cost here?
National guides put installed foam at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot (HomeGuide). We measure and give you a written price.
